Uttar Pradesh Emerges As Major Hub For Cross-Border E-Commerce Exports
The state's export ecosystem, comprising MSMEs, artisans, manufacturers and traditional industry clusters, is increasingly leveraging digital commerce platforms to access international markets and diversify export opportunities.
MSMEs And ODOP Drive Export Growth
Uttar Pradesh's exports grew from nearly Rs 86,000 crore in 2017-18 to around Rs 1.86 lakh crore in 2024-25, supported significantly by MSMEs and the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative.
As per official data, Gautam Buddha Nagar district accounts for nearly half of the state's total exports. The other leading export districts of the state include Ghaziabad, Kanpu, Moradabad, Agra and Aligarh.
The state's manufacturing landscape spans sectors such as handicrafts, textiles, leather, engineering goods, food processing and traditional artisanal products.
The Uttar Pradesh Export Promotion Policy 2025-30 has introduced several measures to support exporters, including export incentives, logistics assistance, digital onboarding support and e-commerce facilitation for small businesses.
Digital Platforms Expand Global Market Access
More than 25,000 sellers from Uttar Pradesh have already enrolled in global e-commerce export programmes, reflecting increasing export readiness among MSMEs, artisans and startup enterprises.
Through digital platforms, businesses are reaching customers across the United States, Europe, the Middle East and other international markets.
Industry observers note that digital commerce is helping enterprises from smaller cities and traditional clusters participate directly in global trade without relying entirely on conventional export intermediaries.
Traditional Industry Clusters Gain International Visibility
Strong international demand continues to be witnessed for products from key industrial clusters, including carpets from Bhadohi and Mirzapur, silk products from Varanasi, leather goods from Kanpur, chikankari products from Lucknow, brassware from Moradabad, locks from Aligarh, sports goods from Meerut, garments from Noida and engineering products from Ghaziabad.
The ODOP programme is also emerging as a significant driver of e-commerce exports, with nearly 40 of the state's 75 ODOP districts possessing products with strong potential for expansion in international digital marketplaces.
Industry Sees Strong Potential For Export-Led Growth
Commenting on the sector's growth prospects, Dinesh Goyal, National President, Indian Industries Association (IIA), said, "Uttar Pradesh today has the scale, manufacturing strength, artisan ecosystem, infrastructure growth, and policy support required to emerge as a leading national hub for e-commerce exports. Digital commerce is helping democratise exports by connecting small businesses and local manufacturers directly with global consumers."
He further said that proactive industrial policies, improved infrastructure, investor-focused reforms and a conducive business environment have strengthened industrial confidence and enhanced Uttar Pradesh's attractiveness as a manufacturing and export destination.
Goyal noted that the Uttar Pradesh Export Promotion Policy 2025-30, coupled with ODOP, logistics improvements and digital enablement initiatives, has the potential to create significant export opportunities for MSMEs, startups, women entrepreneurs and artisans across the state.
Challenges Remain Despite Growing Adoption
Despite growing digital adoption, industry stakeholders highlighted that many MSMEs continue to face challenges related to export readiness, logistics fragmentation, compliance requirements, quality standardisation, market intelligence and digital visibility.
They believe that continued policy support, stronger logistics infrastructure, enhanced digital integration and rising global demand for India-made products can help Uttar Pradesh emerge as a major contributor to India's export-led growth through e-commerce.
Industry bodies have also urged policymakers to address issues related to global supply chain disruptions, logistics efficiency, labour reforms, energy availability, tariff concerns and export competitiveness to further strengthen the state's position as a reliable manufacturing and e-commerce export hub.
