Tensions Flare Between Trump, Netanyahu Over Lebanon and Iran Talks

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump reportedly engaged in a heated exchange with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Israel’s recent military escalation in Lebanon, according to accounts from multiple officials familiar with the conversation.

Sources said Trump accused Netanyahu of undermining ongoing US negotiations with Iran and pressed him to abandon a planned strike on Beirut. The call was described as one of the most contentious discussions between the two leaders since Trump returned to office.

According to officials briefed on the conversation, Trump expressed his frustration in unusually blunt terms:

“You’re f***ing crazy. You’d be in prison if it weren’t for me. I’m saving your ass. Everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this,”

Another source said Trump was highly agitated during the call, adding that he shouted: “What the f*** are you doing?”

While reaffirming Israel’s right to self-defense, Trump reportedly questioned the scale and impact of recent Israeli operations, citing concerns over rising civilian casualties and extensive destruction caused by strikes targeting Hezbollah commanders.

Israel has stepped up its air campaign in Lebanon in recent days, focusing on areas it identifies as Hezbollah positions. Israeli forces have also advanced further into southern Lebanon, including the capture of Beaufort Castle, a centuries-old Crusader fortress considered strategically significant.

The escalation has also fed into wider diplomatic tensions involving Iran, where ongoing discussions with the United States have reportedly been complicated by the Lebanon conflict. Iranian parliamentary leadership has warned that continued Israeli operations could derail negotiations, with one senior official stating that Iran could move beyond suspending talks and toward direct confrontation if the situation worsens.

Separately, Trump posted on social media that he had spoken with Netanyahu and urged restraint regarding a major operation in Beirut, claiming that the Israeli side had reconsidered immediate action. He also stated that representatives linked to Hezbollah had indicated a willingness to halt attacks on Israel.

Netanyahu, however, presented a different account, stating that he told Trump Israel would proceed with strikes on Beirut if Hezbollah did not cease its attacks. He reaffirmed that Israel’s military posture had not changed, writing that operations in southern Lebanon would continue “as planned.”
