UN Chief Condemns Pakistan Deadly Train Bombing
(MENAFN) United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday issued a strong condemnation of a devastating suicide bombing that tore through a passenger train in Pakistan's restive Balochistan province, leaving at least 28 dead and scores wounded.
Guterres "condemns the explosion targeting a train in Pakistan's Balochistan province. He extends his deepest condolences to the families of those killed and wishes a swift recovery to those injured," UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said in an official statement.
"The Secretary-General reiterates that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is unacceptable. He stresses that the perpetrators must be identified and brought to justice. He reaffirms the solidarity of the United Nations with the people and the Government of Pakistan," Dujarric added.
The powerful blast, believed to have been carried out by a suicide bomber, struck on Sunday as the train was en route toward the city's cantonment area, derailing carriages and triggering mass casualties. Authorities confirmed at least 28 fatalities and 90 injuries.
Balochistan — a mineral-rich province and a critical corridor for the multibillion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) — has endured decades of persistent militant violence, largely driven by armed separatist factions seeking independence from Islamabad.
The attack marks one of the deadliest strikes on Pakistan's rail network in recent memory, drawing urgent international attention to the deteriorating security situation in the volatile southwestern region.
