HPCL And Tata Motors Launch Used Oil Recycling Initiative To Boost Circular Economy


(MENAFN- KNN India) Mumbai, May 26 (KNN) Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Tata Motors have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pilot a structured and scalable model for the collection and recycling of used automotive lubricants, supporting India's circular economy ambitions and compliance with evolving Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations.

The partnership aims to create an organised and traceable system for managing used lubricants, which are classified as hazardous waste, covering the entire value chain from collection and storage to recycling and reuse.

Under the initiative, used lubricants will be processed into high-quality re-refined base oil, helping improve resource efficiency while reducing environmental risks associated with improper disposal.

The pilot project is expected to establish industry benchmarks for responsible waste management and contribute to the development of a more sustainable and resource-efficient automotive ecosystem.

Industry Collaboration To Advance Circular Economy Goals

Launching the initiative, Ch Srinivas, Executive Director, Lubes, HPCL, said achieving circularity in used oil requires reintegrating re-refined base oil into finished lubricant products.

He noted that the collaboration with Tata Motors represents an important step towards creating a scalable model for used oil circularity while helping reduce the carbon footprint of operations.

Vikram Agrawal, Head, Parts and Services,Tata Motors, said used automotive lubricants can cause long-term environmental damage if not managed responsibly.

He said the partnership combines the strengths of both organisations to build an organised recycling framework that could serve as a model for wider industry adoption.

Structured Collection Network To Support Responsible Disposal

As part of the agreement, HPCL will oversee the aggregation and transportation of used lubricants through authorised collection channels and ensure that the material is directed to registered recyclers.

Tata Motors will utilise its extensive authorised service network to facilitate structured collection and encourage responsible disposal practices among customers and service partners.

The pilot will initially be implemented across select states and monitored by a joint committee comprising representatives from both organisations, which will evaluate performance and assess opportunities for scaling up the initiative.

Tata Motors currently operates more than 4,500 sales and service touchpoints across India and offers integrated lifecycle support solutions for commercial vehicle customers through its Sampoorna Seva 2.0 programme and Fleet Edge connected vehicle platform.

The collaboration reflects growing efforts by industry stakeholders to align with sustainability objectives while promoting resource recovery and circular economy practices within India's automotive and lubricant sectors.
