Taiwanese Pop Star Is The Buyer Of $20 M. Matisse Painting At Sotheby's
Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou has confirmed that he was the winning bidder for Henri Matisse's 1924 painting La Séance du Matin, a purchase that places one of modern art's most closely watched names squarely inside the May auction conversation. Chou announced the acquisition on Instagram, where he described the work as a long-sought addition tied to his admiration for Matisse's Nice period.
The painting sold at Sotheby's modern art evening sale last Tuesday for $20 million before fees and $21.2 million with fees. It had been estimated at $20 million to $30 million. According to reporting cited by The New York Times, Chou guaranteed the work and received an $800,000 rebate on the purchase price.
The sale's most dramatic result came from another Matisse in the same auction, La Chaise lorraine, which climbed to $48.4 million after a bidding contest that lasted more than ten minutes. That work, too, remains with an undisclosed buyer. Together, the two results helped define a sale that was solid rather than explosive, but still underscored the market's appetite for major Matisse canvases.
Chou is no casual buyer. The singer has said in interviews that he devotes a large share of his touring income to art, and he is known to collect works by Pablo Picasso and Jean-Michel Basquiat. His Instagram post also reflected a collector's intimacy with the artist: he recalled standing outside Matisse's home in Nice and imagining the painter at work above the street.
For the auction market, the purchase is notable not only for its price, but for the visibility of the buyer. In an era when celebrity collectors increasingly move between pop culture and the secondary market, Chou's Matisse offers a clear example of how personal devotion, financial leverage, and auction-room strategy can converge in a single lot.
