Russian Strike On Kyiv Damages National Art Museum Of Ukraine
A Russian strike on Kyiv has caused serious damage to the National Art Museum of Ukraine, striking the building hard enough to shatter windows, weaken the façade, and damage the skylight roof that lights the second-floor galleries. The museum's collection and staff were not harmed.
According to a report from Reform, the blast wave hit the historic structure with enough force to blow out windows, damage window frames, and partially collapse plaster from both exterior walls and several interior halls. The glass covering the skylight roof, which provides natural overhead light for the exhibition spaces above, was also damaged.
The museum was empty during the attack. Its valuable holdings had been moved to secure storage in the first days of the Russian invasion, a precaution that likely prevented a far greater loss. The damage, however, adds another mark to Ukraine's cultural infrastructure at a moment when museums, churches, and monuments remain vulnerable to the war's expanding reach.
Tatsiana Berezhna, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy and Minister of Culture, said in a statement that the National Art Museum of Ukraine preserves the history of Ukrainian art and that Russia is“systematically attacking civilian infrastructure and cultural institutions.” She added that each strike is an attempt“to intimidate and destroy our identity,” and said the government is documenting the damage while continuing restoration efforts.
Ukraine's Ministry of Culture is preparing an appeal to UNESCO, the United Nations agency responsible for cultural and natural heritage protection. International observers have also been invited to the site to formally document the destruction, since deliberate or collateral strikes on cultural heritage sites can fall under the definition of war crimes.
For Ukraine, the damage is not only architectural. It is another reminder that the war is being fought against buildings, collections, and the institutions that hold national memory together.
