Qatar Wades Into High-Stakes Tehran Peace Talks

(MENAFN) A Qatari diplomatic delegation held talks Friday with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran, intensifying international efforts to bring an end to a war now entering its fourth month, an Iranian semi-official news agency reported.

The discussions, confirmed by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, come as the conflict — ignited on Feb. 28 following joint U.S.-Israeli military strikes against Iran — shows no immediate signs of resolution without sustained third-party intervention.

Tasnim underscored Islamabad's central diplomatic role in the process, noting: "The mediator between the US and Iran remains the Pakistani side."

Pakistan's engagement reached a new operational tempo Friday morning when Field Marshal Asim Munir, chief of the Pakistani army, touched down in Tehran for his second wartime visit to the Iranian capital. The Pakistan Army confirmed his arrival in an official statement, adding: "On arrival, he was received and warmly welcomed by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni." The statement further noted: "Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was also present at the reception."

Pakistani sources indicated Munir's agenda will encompass Iran-U.S. negotiations, broader regional stability, and additional "important issues," though officials declined to specify the visit's duration.

Mohsin Naqvi has separately remained in Tehran for two consecutive days, participating in indirect back-channel communications between Washington and Tehran — underscoring the depth of Pakistan's diplomatic commitment.

Munir's previous three-day Tehran visit last month yielded high-level access across Iran's civilian and military establishment. He held individual meetings with President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters Commander Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi.

Pakistan's mediation role carries historic weight: Islamabad brokered a ceasefire on April 8 that suspended active hostilities, then hosted the most senior direct U.S.-Iran dialogue since 1979 on April 11–12. Pakistani officials are now pressing to convene a second round of face-to-face negotiations between the two adversaries, with Munir positioned as the linchpin of that effort.
