French Finance Minister Says G7 Shows Value of Multilateralism

(MENAFN) According to reports, French Finance Minister Roland Lescure said on Monday that the G7 meeting in Paris would serve as an opportunity to demonstrate the effectiveness of multilateral cooperation amid continued tensions in the Middle East.

Speaking ahead of the gathering of finance ministers, which is scheduled to continue through Tuesday, Lescure said: "I think today we are going to show that multilateralism is useful and that it works."

According to reports, he emphasized the importance of showing that countries can work together to address shared global challenges, including economic imbalances, increasing competition over raw materials and critical minerals, and crises affecting vulnerable nations.

Lescure also warned that current patterns of global economic growth are unsustainable, stating: "The way global growth is unfolding today is clearly unsustainable. We must address this and commit to one another to ensure that we return to a more sustainable growth model."

The meeting is taking place amid heightened regional tensions following US and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year, which were followed by retaliatory actions from Tehran and disruptions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports.

A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation came into effect on April 8, though negotiations in Islamabad did not produce a permanent agreement. According to reports, the truce was later extended indefinitely by US President Donald Trump.
