China Reaffirms Political Approach to North Korea Nuclear Issue
(MENAFN) According to reports, China said Monday that it continues to work in “its own way” toward a “political settlement” of North Korea’s nuclear issue, while avoiding direct confirmation of a White House statement claiming Beijing and Washington share the goal of denuclearizing Pyongyang.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated in Beijing that “China's position and policy on the Korean Peninsula maintain continuity and consistency. We have been playing a constructive role in our own way in advancing a political settlement of the issue.”
The remarks came after the White House said on Sunday that US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed a common objective of denuclearizing North Korea during meetings held in Beijing last week, according to reports.
The two leaders met in the Chinese capital over two days and discussed several major international issues, including tensions on the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, the US-Israeli conflict involving Iran, and bilateral trade relations, according to reports.
Guo also said Beijing remains committed to encouraging the “relevant parties” to address what he described as the “root cause and crux” of the Korean Peninsula issue and to pursue a political resolution while helping reduce tensions and maintain regional stability.
According to reports, North Korea has recently intensified missile testing activity and previously declared that its nuclear status is “irreversible.”
