IAEA Warns of Nuclear Risk After Drone Strike Near UAE Barakah Plant

(MENAFN) According to reports, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed “grave concern” following a Sunday drone strike that sparked a fire near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates, calling for maximum military restraint to prevent the risk of a nuclear incident.

The agency said radiation levels at the facility remain within normal limits and no injuries have been reported, according to information shared by the UAE and cited on social media platform X.

According to reports, the strike caused a fire in an electrical generator located outside the plant’s inner perimeter. Emergency diesel generators are currently supplying power to unit 3 of the facility while the situation is being managed.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that any military activity posing a risk to nuclear safety is unacceptable. He emphasized the need for maximum restraint around nuclear facilities to prevent potential nuclear accidents, according to reports.
