S. Korea Adopts New Approach Focused on Peaceful Coexistence with N. Korea
(MENAFN) South Korea’s current administration has shifted its North Korea policy toward emphasizing peaceful coexistence rather than confrontation, according to reports citing a newly released government white paper.
The document, issued by the Unification Ministry, reflects a notable change in tone from previous policies and outlines efforts aimed at rebuilding inter-Korean trust and reducing military tensions. It highlights the government’s intention to prioritize stability and dialogue over pressure-based strategies.
According to reports, the policy framework includes three core principles: respect for North Korea’s political system, rejection of unification through absorption, and avoidance of hostile actions. The administration has also taken steps such as suspending anti-Pyongyang leaflet campaigns and halting border loudspeaker broadcasts in an effort to ease tensions.
The paper further references plans to revive inter-Korean military agreements previously signed in 2018 and explore new arrangements intended to establish a more structured basis for peaceful coexistence between the two sides.
Relations between Seoul and Pyongyang remain largely frozen, with no significant economic or interpersonal exchanges in recent years. Meanwhile, North Korea has recently adjusted its constitutional stance by removing references to unification and further limiting formal ties with the South, according to reports.
