UN Rapporteur Urges Protection of Gaza Aid Flotilla in Mediterranean Waters

(MENAFN) A UN special rapporteur has urged Mediterranean countries to safeguard a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla after activists reported the presence of unidentified vessels near their convoy in international waters, according to statements posted on Monday.

Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, wrote on the US social media platform X, “Hands off the Flotilla,” calling on regional states to protect civilian ships attempting to reach Gaza.

She further appealed to governments in the region to “protect the civilian vessels that are trying to break Israel’s genocidal siege on Gaza,” and also urged them to “break the siege,” “end complicity with Apartheid” and “make justice happen.”

Her remarks were made while resharing a message from the Global Sumud Flotilla, which reported: “Unidentified vessels have been spotted near our fleet.”

In its Sunday evening alert, the flotilla said that unidentified naval ships, speedboats, and drones were detected near its convoy while it was sailing in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea en route to Gaza.

The statement followed the group’s earlier announcement that its mission had entered international waters as it continued its journey toward the Palestinian enclave.
