Russia, Ukraine Complete Prisoner Of War Exchange
(MENAFN) Russia and Ukraine completed a significant prisoner of war exchange Friday, with both sides releasing 205 servicemen each, Russia's Defense Ministry announced.
The ministry confirmed that 205 Russian troops were returned from Ukraine-controlled territory in a direct swap for an equal number of Ukrainian soldiers.
The released Russian servicemen are currently being held in Belarus, where they are receiving medical and psychological care before being transferred back to Russia for further treatment and rehabilitation.
The Defense Ministry credited the exchange to humanitarian mediation carried out by the United Arab Emirates.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the swap on Telegram, announcing that 205 servicemen drawn from the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the National Guard, and the State Border Guard Service had successfully returned home.
The exchange comes on the heels of a broader agreement reached earlier this month, in which Ukraine and Russia committed to releasing 1,000 detainees each as part of an ongoing negotiation process brokered by the United States.
