U.S. Reaffirms Opposition to West Bank Annexation
(MENAFN) A senior US diplomat reaffirmed Washington's opposition to Israeli annexation of the occupied West Bank on Friday, pledging continued American engagement in pursuit of peace and stability across the Middle East — as Security Council members gathered at the UN to confront the worsening situation facing Palestinians.
Ambassador Jeff Bartos, the US representative for UN Management and Reform, delivered the remarks during an Arria-formula session at UN headquarters in New York — a meeting organized by the permanent missions of Denmark, France, Greece, Latvia, and the UK to allow Security Council members to hear direct testimony on conditions affecting Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
Bartos opened with a broad statement of American commitment to the region. "The United States remains committed to working in close partnership with Israel and key Arab nations and the international community to bring peace, prosperity, security and dignity to the region," he told assembled diplomats and Security Council members.
He then drew a clear line on one of the conflict's most contentious flashpoints, citing President Donald Trump directly. "As President (Donald) Trump has made clear, the United States opposes Israeli annexation of the West Bank," Bartos said. "Stability in the West Bank is vital for Israel's security and aligns with our goal of achieving peace in the region."
Bartos confirmed that Washington remains in active consultation with international partners on the ground situation. "We are in regular dialogue with partners about improving stability and security in the West Bank," he said.
The US diplomat also issued an unequivocal condemnation of violence, making clear that Washington's position makes no distinction based on the identity of perpetrators. "We condemn terrorism or criminal violence by any party against any resident in the West Bank," Bartos said.
He closed with a forward-looking pledge encompassing both Gaza and the West Bank. "Furthermore, the United States will continue to work toward a future in which the people in the West Bank and Gaza live in freedom and prosperity and at peace with Israel," Bartos said.
