Slovenia, Spain Urge EU Action to Protect ICC, UN Independence on Gaza

(MENAFN) Slovenia has joined Spain in calling on the European Union to defend the independence of the International Criminal Court and the United Nations, amid ongoing concerns over the situation in Gaza.

Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob expressed support for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, urging stronger European action in response to what they described as an escalating humanitarian and legal crisis.

According to a government statement shared on social media, Golob warned that Europe’s current response has not reflected the seriousness of the situation.

"Europe’s response so far has not matched the gravity of the situation. We need to act now because fundamental European values cannot carry a price tag. The independence of international courts is non-negotiable," he said.

The statement also stressed concerns over growing threats directed at international legal institutions and the broader rule of law, framing the issue as one that extends beyond a single conflict.

Earlier the same day, Sánchez urged the European Commission to activate the Blocking Statute to protect the independence of international institutions, including the ICC and the UN, and their work related to Gaza.

"Spain is not looking the other way. Sanctioning those who defend international justice puts the entire human rights system at risk. The EU cannot stand idly by in the face of this persecution," Sánchez wrote on X.

The coordinated positions from Ljubljana and Madrid reflect increasing calls within parts of the EU for a more assertive stance in defense of international legal bodies and humanitarian frameworks.
