Diabetes Qatar Launches Comprehensive Awareness Campaign To Support Pilgrims Living With Diabetes Ahead Of Hajj Season
Doha, Qatar: As part of its commitment to promoting the health and safety of pilgrims, the Diabetes Qatar, in collaboration with the Hajj Affairs Committee, has launched a comprehensive awareness campaign targeting pilgrims living with diabetes. The initiative aims to empower them to perform Hajj rituals safely and with greater health awareness.
Approximately 300 pilgrims living with diabetes benefited from the campaign, which included the dissemination of educational messages and health guidelines prior to travel. These materials focused on managing blood glucose levels during Hajj and adapting to changes in lifestyle and physical activity throughout the pilgrimage.
The Diabetes Qatar also organised an in-person educational programme held at its premises from May 4 to 6. The programme was attended by a number of registered pilgrims and featured one-on-one consultations with healthcare specialists, along with personalised health guidance tailored to each participant's needs.
The programme included a range of essential health screenings for individuals living with diabetes, such as blood glucose testing, body mass index (BMI) assessment, and nutritional consultations. These consultations provided practical dietary guidance to help pilgrims make appropriate food choices during their journey. Additional screenings included foot and eye examinations-given their importance in preventing diabetes-related complications-as well as oral and dental health checks, conducted in collaboration with the Primary Health Care Corporation and Naseem Al Rabeeh Medical Centre.
Executive Director of the Diabetes Qatar, Dr. Abdulla Al-Hamaq said,“We are committed to providing comprehensive support to pilgrims living with diabetes by equipping them with the knowledge and guidance needed to perform their rituals safely. This campaign reflects our ongoing commitment to raising health awareness and empowering patients to effectively manage their condition, particularly during seasons that involve physical exertion and significant changes in daily routine, such as Hajj.”
Manager of oral health Promotion & Prevention at PHCC Dr. Najat Alyafei said,“ As part of the collaboration between the Qatar Diabetes Association and the Oral Health Promotion and Prevention Department, a health awareness activity was conducted for diabetic patients preparing for Hajj under the theme Safe Hajj for Diabetic Patients.”
The initiative highlighted the critical role of oral health in overall disease prevention, particularly for individuals with diabetes. Practical guidance was provided on proper oral hygiene, prevention of oral infections, and management of potential dental emergencies during Hajj.
Participants were also advised to undergo dental check-ups prior to travel to avoid complications, in addition to receiving on-site consultations and screenings through a mobile dental unit.
