Norway Expands Offshore Oil Exploration Amid High Energy Prices
(MENAFN) The Norwegian government has announced the opening of new offshore exploration areas as part of efforts to further develop its petroleum sector, citing high global energy prices linked to heightened geopolitical tensions, according to reports.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said authorities will offer 70 new blocks for exploration under the country’s annual Allocation in Predefined Areas (APA) licensing round, as reported by a broadcaster. The move is described as part of a broader strategy to expand Norway’s energy production capacity.
The proposed blocks are distributed across three regions: 38 in the Barents Sea, 10 in the Norwegian Sea, and 22 in the North Sea.
Under the APA system, companies are allowed to apply for exploration rights in pre-approved areas that have already been opened and are considered well surveyed by authorities.
According to reports, some of the newly designated blocks are located closer to the Norwegian coastline than in previous licensing rounds, marking a notable expansion of exploration activity into nearshore areas within the APA framework.
The announcement comes amid sustained high energy prices in global markets, with Norway continuing to play a significant role as a major supplier of oil and gas to Europe.
