Macron Reaffirms Support for Iraqi Sovereignty in Call with PM-Designate

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron holds a phone conversation on Sunday with Iraqi Prime Minister-designate Ali Al-Zaidi, focusing on Iraq’s political future and regional stability, according to reports.

Macron congratulates Al-Zaidi on his appointment and wishes him success in forming the next government, describing the task as crucial for Iraq at a sensitive regional moment.

"I spoke with Ali Zaidi, the Prime Minister tasked with forming the next Iraqi government. I congratulated him on his appointment and extended my best wishes for success in this decisive mission for Iraq’s future, in a particularly demanding regional context," Macron wrote on US social media platform X.

During the call, Macron also reiterates France’s emphasis on Iraq’s sovereignty and stability, stressing that a stable and independent Iraq is important for both Middle Eastern and European security.

He further underscores that France will continue supporting Iraq and strengthening bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, as stated by reports.

Macron also raises the need for a swift conclusion to investigations into a March attack in Makhmour that killed a French soldier and injured others, according to reports.

"A stable, sovereign Iraq that is fully in control of its destiny is essential for the security of both the Middle East and Europe. France will continue to stand alongside the Iraqi people to help achieve this and to further deepen our strategic partnership across all areas," Macron added.
