Bahrain Strips Citizenship Over Alleged Support for Iran During Conflict

(MENAFN) Bahrain has announced the revocation of citizenship for 69 individuals, including members of their families, over allegations that they expressed support for Iran during the recent conflict, according to an official statement released on Monday.

A news agency reported that authorities withdrew nationality from those accused of “expressed sympathy and praise for Iran’s hostile and criminal acts,” adding that the total number affected, including dependents, has reached 69 so far.

Earlier in March, Bahrain’s High Criminal Court held its first proceedings involving individuals accused of “promoting and glorifying Iranian hostile terrorist acts,” although the report did not specify how many defendants were involved in those cases.

The decision comes in the context of heightened regional tensions following a US-Israeli military campaign against Iran that began on February 28. Iran responded with strikes targeting Israel and other regional states hosting US military assets.

The confrontation reportedly resulted in more than 3,300 deaths before a ceasefire was announced on April 8, brokered with the involvement of Pakistan. While the truce was initially expected to expire on April 22, US President Donald Trump later stated on April 21 that it would be extended indefinitely following requests from Pakistani leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military chief Asim Munir.
