Merz Says US is Struggling to Maintain Talks with Iran
(MENAFN) Friedrich Merz has said the United States is struggling to manage negotiations with Iran and is being outmaneuvered diplomatically, according to remarks cited by reports.
Speaking during a visit in Marsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Merz argued that Iran appears stronger than anticipated while Washington lacks a coherent strategy in the ongoing diplomatic standoff. He suggested that the current situation reflects weak US planning in the negotiation process.
He also drew parallels with past Western military engagements, noting that major conflicts are difficult not only to enter but also to exit, referencing prolonged US involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq as cautionary examples.
According to Merz, there is currently no clear indication of how the US intends to resolve the situation strategically, while he described Iran’s approach as highly calculated, whether through active negotiation or deliberate delay.
He further stated that Iranian authorities are exerting significant pressure through their leadership structures, particularly institutions he referred to in critical terms.
The comments come amid heightened tensions involving the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping disruptions have contributed to rising energy prices worldwide.
Reports also indicate that diplomatic efforts have stalled after US President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with recent Iranian proposals and canceled a planned envoy visit to regional talks.
Washington and Israel reportedly launched a military campaign against Iran earlier this year targeting its nuclear and missile capabilities, although Iranian forces have continued retaliatory operations in the region.
Tehran has maintained control over key maritime restrictions, including limitations affecting passage through the Strait of Hormuz, which it links to broader regional security concerns.
