Sanctioned Russian Billionaire’s Yacht Passes Through Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) A superyacht linked to sanctioned Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov has crossed the Strait of Hormuz, a heavily restricted and strategically sensitive maritime route, amid reduced shipping traffic tied to ongoing regional tensions, according to reports.
The vessel, identified as the Nord, departed from a marina in Dubai at around 1400 GMT on Friday, passed through the strait on Saturday morning, and later arrived in Muscat early Sunday, according to ship-tracking data from MarineTraffic cited in reports.
The Strait of Hormuz, located at the entrance to the Gulf, is one of the world’s most critical shipping corridors, typically carrying around one-fifth of global oil supplies. However, since the escalation of the Iran-related conflict on Feb. 28, vessel movement through the waterway has reportedly declined significantly, with only limited commercial traffic continuing each day.
Before the disruption, the strait regularly recorded between 125 and 140 ship transits daily, highlighting the scale of the current slowdown.
The United States has also introduced restrictions on Iranian ports in response to developments in the waterway, further contributing to heightened maritime sensitivity in the region, according to reports.
Mordashov, a major steel industry figure and principal shareholder of Severstal, has been sanctioned by both the United States Department of the Treasury and the European Union following Russia’s war in Ukraine, due to his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The yacht’s passage comes as Russia and Iran continue to strengthen their strategic relationship.
The two countries signed an agreement in 2025 aimed at expanding cooperation in areas including security and intelligence, as stated by reports.
