White House Says Iran’s Ship Seizures in Hormuz Do Not Violate Truce
(MENAFN) The White House has stated that Iran’s seizure of two container ships in the Strait of Hormuz does not constitute a breach of the ceasefire, arguing that the vessels were neither US- nor Israeli-owned, according to reports.
The statement came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) released footage showing naval personnel intercepting and boarding commercial ships in the strategic waterway. The operation involved two MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company vessels, identified as the *Epaminondas* and the *MSC Francesca*, while a third ship, the *Euphoria*, was reportedly struck and disabled during the incident.
The seizures occurred between April 22 and April 23 in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route that has become increasingly tense amid ongoing regional confrontations.
The IRGC said the vessels were targeted for alleged maritime violations and were escorted into Iranian-controlled waters. Video footage shows armed personnel boarding the ships from fast boats and taking control of them.
The ship’s management company confirmed that one of the vessels was approached and fired upon near the coast of Oman, causing significant damage to its bridge, while reporting that all crew members remained safe. Another vessel was forced to stop following gunfire but reportedly suffered no injuries or major damage.
Panamanian authorities condemned the incident, describing it as an illegal seizure and warning that it poses a serious risk to maritime security.
While the incident has been widely interpreted as connected to ongoing tensions between Tehran and Washington, US officials maintained that the actions do not violate the current ceasefire framework.
