UN Chief Voice Concerns Over Coordinated Attacks Across Mali

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep alarm over a wave of violent attacks sweeping Mali, strongly condemning the bloodshed and calling for urgent coordinated international action, his spokesperson announced Saturday.

Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement that the UN chief stands in solidarity with the Malian people, underscoring the critical importance of safeguarding civilians and civilian infrastructure amid the escalating crisis.

The statement read: "The Secretary-General calls for coordinated international support to address the evolving threat of violent extremism and terrorism in the Sahel and to meet urgent humanitarian needs. He reiterates his call for robust security coordination and collaboration across the region."

Earlier Saturday, Mali's transitional government confirmed that armed terrorist groups had launched a series of coordinated, simultaneous strikes on multiple cities across the country, leaving 16 people wounded.

Authorities said Malian defense and security forces had successfully brought the attacks under control, neutralizing several terrorists, repelling the assault, and foiling the attackers' broader objectives.
