India, Sri Lanka Explore Energy Connectivity Via Proposed Oil Pipeline

(MENAFN- KNN India) New Delhi, Apr 20 (KNN) Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Sunday discussed a proposal to connect the two countries through an oil pipeline, as part of efforts to strengthen energy cooperation.

The discussions took place during Radhakrishnan's visit to Sri Lanka, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stating that both sides reviewed ongoing initiatives, including the proposed energy hub in Trincomalee and enhanced connectivity in the energy sector.

Officials highlighted the importance of such cooperation amid global energy uncertainties arising from the ongoing crisis in West Asia, reported The Economic Times.

Broader Bilateral Engagement and Development Cooperation

The two leaders also held wide-ranging talks on strengthening bilateral ties, including cooperation in housing projects, development initiatives and addressing fishermen-related issues in a humanitarian manner.

During the meeting, Radhakrishnan reiterated India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasising deeper developmental and economic collaboration between the two countries.

He also underlined India's role as a first responder in Sri Lanka's recent crises, including the 2022 economic downturn and assistance following Cyclone Ditwah, along with ongoing support amid the current regional challenges.

Progress on Projects and Future Agreements

Both sides reviewed progress on Indian-assisted housing projects, with officials noting that nearly 50,000 houses have been delivered to Tamil communities, and an additional 10,000 are under construction.

The visit also included discussions on proposed agreements such as the Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) and digital identity initiatives.

Officials said the visit, the first by an Indian Vice President to Sri Lanka, is expected to further strengthen longstanding civilisational, cultural and economic ties between the two nations.
