Louisiana Domestic Violence Incident Leaves Eight Children Dead
(MENAFN) Eight children have lost their lives and several others were left wounded after a gunman carried out a deadly domestic violence attack across multiple locations in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Sunday morning.
Officers from Shreveport Police were called to the scene shortly after 6 a.m. local time (1100 GMT) in response to a reported disturbance. The suspect, Shamar Elkins, began his assault on Harrison Street, where he shot a woman, before driving to a residence on West 79th Street — where he fatally shot eight children.
Authorities confirmed the victims were between 1 and 14 years of age. Seven of the children were Elkins' own, and the eighth was a family friend visiting the home.
Two women were left in serious condition and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. A teenager was also wounded, though their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Elkins subsequently forced an adult male out of his vehicle at gunpoint near Linwood Avenue and West 79th Street, prompting officers to launch a pursuit that extended across the Red River into Bossier Parish. The chase came to a violent end in Bossier City, where the suspect exchanged fire with law enforcement before being fatally shot.
Louisiana State Police have taken charge of the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Initial findings indicate that the officers involved acted within established departmental guidelines. Shreveport Police Department spokesperson Christopher Bordelon told reporters that investigators believe Elkins was the sole shooter across all locations.
Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux was visibly shaken, describing the bloodshed as "maybe the worst tragic situation we've ever had," and stating: "It's a terrible morning."
