Republic of Congo’s PM Steps Down

(MENAFN) Republic of Congo Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso tendered his resignation alongside his entire Cabinet to the country's president on Sunday, formally opening the door to a sweeping government overhaul, according to a statement issued by the presidential office.

The resignation follows closely on the heels of President Denis Sassou Nguesso's swearing-in ceremony for a fifth consecutive term, after securing reelection in the March 15 general polls.

Until a new governing team is assembled and formally installed, outgoing ministers have been directed to remain in their posts and oversee the administration of day-to-day governmental affairs, the statement confirmed.

Makosso, who was first appointed to the premiership in 2021, departed graciously, as the presidential statement noted he "expressed all his gratitude to the Head of State for the trust he has enjoyed during the exercise of his functions and indicated that he remains at the disposal of the President of the Republic."

At his inauguration ceremony last week, President Nguesso struck a continental tone, pledging to "contribute to resolution of conflicts that undermine the African continent" — signaling an ambitious foreign policy agenda alongside what now appears to be a significant domestic political reset.

No timeline has yet been announced for the appointment of a new prime minister or the formation of a successor Cabinet.
