French Container Ship Targeted by Warning Shots in Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) A container vessel operated by French shipping giant CMA CGM came under fire while navigating the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, the company disclosed Sunday, confirming the ship sustained damage but that all crew members were unharmed.
The company identified the targeted ship as the CMA CGM Everglade, a French-flagged container vessel. In its statement, CMA CGM described the incident as involving "warning shots" and confirmed the vessel remained seaworthy, with damage confined to a number of containers aboard.
The International Maritime Organization, as cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP), placed the location of the strike north of Kumzar, Oman, though the full extent of the structural damage was not disclosed. Authorities reported no environmental contamination stemming from the incident.
The Everglade was not alone — several other vessels operating in the same stretch of water also reported coming under fire from Iranian forces, the incidents coinciding with Tehran's abrupt decision to reverse course on keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to navigation.
Iranian officials framed the waterway's closure as a direct countermeasure against a sustained US naval blockade targeting the country's ports — a move that has rapidly escalated maritime tensions across one of the world's most strategically critical shipping corridors, through which roughly a fifth of global oil supplies pass daily.
No pollution was detected in the affected waters.
