India Calls in Iran Envoy as Shooting Targets Indian Ships in Hormuz

(MENAFN) India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) voiced serious alarm Saturday over a shooting incident targeting two India-flagged vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, releasing an official statement condemning the episode.

In a swift diplomatic response, the MEA summoned Iranian Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, for a face-to-face meeting with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, during which New Delhi's deep unease over the incident was formally conveyed.

Misri underscored India's unwavering commitment to the protection of commercial maritime vessels and the seafarers aboard them, while also acknowledging that Tehran had previously played a constructive role in ensuring the safe transit of multiple India-bound ships through the strategic waterway.

Pressing the matter further, Misri reiterated the gravity of opening fire on civilian merchant vessels and called on the Iranian envoy to relay India's position directly to authorities in Tehran — urging that the facilitation of safe passage for India-bound ships through the Strait be promptly restored.

Media reports indicated that neither the Indian crew members nor the vessels themselves sustained any damage as a result of the firing.
