China Denies Plans to Supply Weapons to Iran, Calls Reports ‘Groundless’

(MENAFN) China has pushed back against claims that it intends to supply weapons to Iran, labeling such reports as unfounded.

During a routine press briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stressed that the country maintains a cautious and accountable approach when it comes to exporting military equipment. He explained that China enforces strict oversight in line with its domestic export regulations as well as its international commitments.

"China always acts prudently and responsibly on the export of military products, and exercises strict control in accordance with China’s laws and regulations on export control and due international obligations," Guo said.

He further criticized the claims, describing them as an unjustified attempt to tarnish China’s image and link it to controversial activities.

Guo expressed Beijing's opposition to this "groundless smear and ill-intentioned association."

Recent reports had suggested, based on assessments cited by sources, that US intelligence believes China could provide Iran with advanced air defense equipment in the near future.

According to these accounts, Iran might be taking advantage of a temporary ceasefire to replenish parts of its arsenal through intermediaries, potentially with assistance from international partners.

The equipment mentioned in the reports includes portable air-defense weapons, commonly referred to as MANPADS.
