African Union Welcomes China-Pakistan Plan to Ease Middle East Tensions
(MENAFN) The African Union (AU) has expressed support for a China-Pakistan five-point initiative aimed at reducing tensions in the Gulf and broader Middle East amid the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran, according to reports.
AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf highlighted that the plan, which calls for an immediate ceasefire, civilian protection, and the security of maritime routes, could help guide the crisis toward a negotiated solution. “The initiative constitutes a timely and constructive contribution to ongoing international efforts to de-escalate tensions,” he said, urging restraint and compliance with international law.
Youssouf also warned that the conflict’s effects are already being felt worldwide, disrupting energy supplies, food systems, and economic stability, with African nations particularly vulnerable to the fallout. The AU stressed that lasting solutions can only be achieved through dialogue and diplomacy and called on all parties to urgently de-escalate and engage in sustained negotiations.
The five-point plan proposed by China and Pakistan earlier this week includes an immediate cessation of hostilities, the prompt start of peace talks, protection of non-military targets, the safeguarding of shipping lanes, and adherence to the UN Charter. The AU affirmed its readiness to cooperate with international and regional partners to support de-escalation efforts and promote peace and stability in the region.
