Trump Considers Limited Iran Strikes to Break Talks Stalemate
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump is weighing a resumption of limited military strikes against Iran, alongside an ongoing naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, in a bid to break a deadlock in stalled peace negotiations, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.
According to the outlet, which cited officials and individuals briefed on the matter, the strikes were among several options Trump was actively considering on Sunday — just hours after diplomacy between Washington and Tehran collapsed in Pakistan.
While limited military action remains on the table, officials indicated that "a full-fledged bombing campaign" was less likely given the prospect of further destabilizing the region and "the president's aversion to prolonged military conflicts."
The Wall Street Journal also reported that Trump could pursue a more measured approach to the waterway restrictions, potentially seeking a more temporary blockade "while he pressures allies to take responsibility for a prolonged military escort mission through the strait in the future."
The developments follow Trump's announcement earlier Sunday that the U.S. Navy would immediately begin blocking vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz in either direction.
U.S. Central Command subsequently confirmed the move in an official statement, announcing that American forces would begin enforcing a blockade of "all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports" starting Monday at 10 a.m. Eastern Time.
