5.8 Earthquake Claims Eight Lives in Afghanistan


(MENAFN) At least eight people are dead after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan on Friday evening, Mohammad Yousuf Hammad, spokesman for the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority, confirmed.

A residential structure in Kabul province collapsed as a direct result of the tremor, claiming eight lives and leaving one child injured, Hammad said late Friday night.

Strong shockwaves reverberated across the capital, Kabul. Seismic data placed the epicenter at coordinates 36.55 degrees north latitude and 70.85 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 186.4 kilometers.

Authorities have not yet issued a full damage assessment, and casualty figures may rise as emergency teams continue their response operations.
