Witkoff to Deliver Classified Senate Briefing on Iran War

(MENAFN) US envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to provide a classified update to a select bipartisan group of senators regarding the ongoing conflict involving Iran, according to reports.

The closed-door session, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, is being organized under the direction of Senator Joni Ernst, who leads a Senate Armed Services subcommittee focused on emerging threats and capabilities. The briefing will reportedly involve a small group of lawmakers from both political parties.

Meanwhile, Democratic members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee have called for several senior officials to appear before Congress. Those requested to testify include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Witkoff himself, and Jared Kushner, as stated by reports.

The push for congressional oversight comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following large-scale US-Israeli military operations against Iran that began in late February. The strikes have resulted in over 1,300 deaths, including the country’s then-supreme leader, according to reports.

Iran has since responded with drone and missile attacks targeting multiple countries in the region, including Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations hosting US military installations. These retaliatory actions have disrupted global markets and aviation systems.

US military casualties have also been reported, with 13 service members killed and approximately 200 others injured since the conflict began.

Prior to the outbreak of hostilities, diplomatic efforts had been underway, with Witkoff and Kushner participating in negotiations mediated by Oman concerning Iran’s nuclear program.
