Amani Karisa

• Associate Research Scientist, African Population and Health Research Center

Dr. Amani Karisa is an international education academic and practitioner, conducting research under the Human Development theme. His critical and interdisciplinary research covers a range of areas such as inclusive education, disability studies, teacher professional development, universal design for learning, decolonial theory, and intersectionality.

Amani holds a Ph.D. in Disability Studies from the University of Cape Town, as well as Master of Education and Bachelor of Education degrees. He has worked in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa, and his immediate previous position was a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Cape Town.

Amani's work focuses on understanding marginality and vulnerability, particularly as caused by disability, disaster, gender, poverty, and the unequal power relations between the Global North and the Global South, with the goal of exhuming silenced voices and catalyzing genuine transformation.
