Americans Largely Oppose Military Intervention in Iran
(MENAFN) A recent poll indicates that most Americans do not support US military action against Iran, even as tensions rise following US and Israeli strikes, and despite widespread recognition of Tehran as a national security concern.
According to the survey, 56% of respondents oppose or strongly oppose military action in Iran, while 44% support or strongly support such intervention. These figures are largely consistent with a similar poll conducted earlier in January.
Public opinion is sharply divided along party lines. A majority of Democrats, 86%, oppose military action, along with 61% of independents. Conversely, 84% of Republicans express support for US military involvement.
While over 80% of Americans believe Iran poses some level of threat to the US, fewer consider the threat severe. The poll found that 44% view Iran as a major threat to national security, 40% see it as a minor threat, and 15% believe it poses no threat at all.
Compared with last June, following US airstrikes in Iran, perceptions of Iran’s threat have slightly eased. At that time, 48% considered Iran a major threat, 39% a minor threat, and 13% no threat.
Views also differ by political affiliation: 70% of Republicans now regard Iran as a major threat, up from 64% in 2025, while only 27% of Democrats share this view, down from 38%, with a majority of 54% describing Iran as a minor threat.
