Iran Accuses US, Israel of ‘Cowardly Terror Act’ Against Khamenei
(MENAFN) Iran formally accuses the United States and Israel on Sunday of carrying out a “cowardly act of terror” targeting Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as stated by reports.
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and members of the Security Council, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claims that the strikes on February 28 were deliberate “unprovoked and unjustified acts of aggression” against Iran’s sovereignty.
Araghchi writes: “I am writing to bring to your urgent attention the latest outrageous and criminal act perpetrated against the great nation of Iran by the United States and the Israeli regime. Failure to respond decisively to such conduct will not only embolden its perpetrators but will also inflict lasting and irreparable damage on the foundations of the international legal order for decades to come.”
He describes the attack as a “grave and unprecedented breach” of international law, referencing Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. The letter also cites Article 51, affirming Iran’s “inherent and unequivocal right” to self-defense.
The accusations follow US and Israeli strikes on Iran that killed the supreme leader and several top security officials. In retaliation, Iran launches drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and US assets, prompting many Gulf states to close their airspace.
