Trump Confirms Willingness to Negotiate with Iran Amid Ongoing Strikes
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump says on Sunday that he has agreed to engage in discussions with Iran’s new leadership, even as US-Israeli strikes continue, according to statements cited by reports.
"They want to talk, and I have agreed to talk," Trump tells The Atlantic, adding that Iran should have made concessions sooner. "They waited too long," he says.
He later tells a news agency that Iranian officials "are talking" with the US, without providing additional details.
When asked about the desired outcome of the military operation, Trump states there are "many outcomes that are good," including "decapitating them," referring to Iranian leaders. He emphasizes that the strikes were launched because Iran "wasn't willing to stop their nuclear research" or commit to refraining from developing nuclear weapons.
Asked whether he would halt the strikes during ongoing talks, Trump does not rule it out, saying he would consider stopping if Iran could "satisfy us," but notes that "so far, they haven't been able to."
In a separate interview, Trump claims that 48 Iranian leaders were eliminated "in one shot," calling the operation’s success unprecedented. He adds that the US knows the remaining targets and that military actions are moving "rapidly." Speaking to a news outlet, he says operations are "ahead of schedule."
On casualties, Trump tells a news agency: "We expect casualties with something like this ... We have three, but we expect casualties, but in the end, it's going to be a great deal for the world."
Regarding concerns over oil prices and potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, he remains unconcerned, telling a public podcaster, "I just do what's right. At the end, it works out." He adds to The Atlantic that "This could have been a huge price increase with respect to oil, if things went wrong."
