Yaren Returns for Fifteenth Consecutive Migration Season to Bursa
(MENAFN) Yaren, the famed white stork known for his enduring friendship with fisherman Adem Yilmaz, has arrived once again in northwestern Türkiye for his 15th consecutive migration season to Bursa.
The stork, a beloved symbol of Eskikaraagac Mahallesi on the shores of Lake Uluabat, landed on Yilmaz’s boat as in previous years, giving the pair the chance to recreate their iconic pose. The reunion was captured by nature and wildlife photographer Alper Tuydes.
Yaren shares a nest with his mate, Nazli, and their activities can be viewed live 24/7 via cameras streaming on yarenleylek.com. Yilmaz explained that when Yaren arrived on February 24, many initially mistook him for Nazli, highlighting how difficult it can be to distinguish between individual white storks.
“Yaren is the symbol of our village and very dear to me. He stays here for about six months. We bid him farewell at the end of August. During that time, they raise three to four chicks, help them fledge into the wild, and roughly 15 days later, Yaren and his mate depart,” Yilmaz said.
The fisherman noted that rising water levels in Lake Uluabat are excellent for local birdlife, providing abundant fish to feed on.
white storks typically live up to 40 years, with an average lifespan of 20–35 years in the wild, and often longer in captivity.
Yaren’s extraordinary bond with Yilmaz has drawn global attention for years. The 24/7 live feed attracts viewers worldwide who follow the storks’ daily life, nesting behavior, and family moments in real time.
Eskikaraagac village, where Yaren returns each year, is part of the European Stork Villages Network, promoted by the German conservation foundation EuroNatur, which supports cross-border protection of Europe’s wildlife and honors communities dedicated to white stork conservation.
