South Korean Court Hands Life Sentence to Former President Yoon
(MENAFN) A court in Seoul on Thursday imposed a life prison term on former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol for orchestrating an insurrection linked to his effort to enforce martial law in December 2024.
The Seoul Central District Court found Yoon guilty of serving as an “insurrection ringleader” and delivered a life sentence during the initial trial, according toa news agency.
State prosecutors had pushed for capital punishment in response to his unsuccessful attempt to declare martial law on the evening of Dec. 3, 2024.
Yoon was present at the court session, which was aired live across national television networks.
In its ruling, the court determined that the martial law directive constituted an insurrection, explaining that Yoon aimed to paralyze the National Assembly by dispatching armed forces to the parliamentary complex.
The court additionally handed former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun a 30-year prison sentence, while former Intelligence Commander Noh Sang-won was given 18 years behind bars for their involvement in the aborted martial law proclamation.
Yoon was formally charged in January 2025 with leading an insurrection after announcing martial law in December 2024, a measure that remained in effect for roughly six hours before it was rescinded.
Prosecutors contended that he instructed military personnel and police forces to encircle the National Assembly in an attempt to prevent legislators from overturning his decree.
