Top Army Adviser Gets Removed After Pentagon Directive
(MENAFN) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth instructed Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll to dismiss one of his senior advisers, Col. David Butler, several regional news organizations reported Tuesday.
Hegseth reportedly told Driscoll to terminate Butler — who was poised to receive his "first star" — during a meeting at the Pentagon last week, according to the accounts.
The specific reason for Hegseth's concerns regarding Butler remains undisclosed.
Butler was among more than 30 Army officers eligible for promotion, but Hegseth has expressed reservations about multiple individuals on the list, causing weeks-long delays in the advancement process, the reports indicated.
In response, Butler withdrew his name from consideration and submitted his retirement paperwork, aiming to allow other officers to progress with their promotions.
"We greatly appreciate Col. Dave Butler’s lifetime of service in America’s Army and to our nation.
"Dave has been an integral part of the Army’s transformation efforts. He will be missed, and I sincerely wish him tremendous success in his upcoming retirement after 28 years of service," Driscoll was cited as saying, according to local media outlets.
