New Zealand Tourism Booms as Visitor Arrivals Hit 3.51M

(MENAFN) New Zealand recorded its strongest international tourism performance since the pandemic's onset, with December visitor numbers reaching their highest mark in six years, propelled by surging demand from Chinese and Australian travelers, government data revealed Friday.

Stats NZ reported that overseas arrivals climbed to 3.51 million for the year ending December 2025, representing a 196,000-person increase year-over-year and achieving approximately 90 percent of pre-pandemic traffic levels.

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston highlighted the dramatic Chinese market rebound as a key driver. "We're seeing strong growth in visitors from China, with arrivals up by 29 percent (6,400) in December 2025 compared with December 2024, as more Chinese visitors experience New Zealand's unique scenery and hospitality," she said.

Australia—New Zealand's dominant source market—delivered 1.52 million visitors throughout the year, posting 9.9 percent growth compared to the previous 12-month period, official statistics confirmed.

Upston underscored tourism's economic importance to the island nation. "International tourism is a cornerstone of New Zealand's economic growth, supporting businesses and jobs in communities right across the country," she said, characterizing the latest figures as evidence of sustained recovery momentum.

December 2025 alone witnessed 32,800 additional international arrivals compared to the same month in 2024, Stats NZ data showed.
