31 New Cameras Will Be Installed In Strategic Areas Of Cartago
“We are fighting against a multimillion-dollar monster, which is drug trafficking,” says Mario Redondo, mayor of Cartago.
For this reason, municipal authorities began installing 31 new video surveillance cameras in strategic areas of the province.
These are in addition to the 514 electronic video surveillance and security devices, including community alarms, bus stop shelters, and cameras.
“Drug trafficking has more money every day, they use more powerful weapons, and they manage to recruit more young people.
We are also requesting an increase in the number of law enforcement officers from 13,000 to 19,000 nationwide,” he said.
A total of ¢71 million will be invested in the installation of these new cameras, and an additional ¢74 million will be added to modernize the monitoring center.“The intention is to provide greater evidence of risky situations and try to ensure that people have greater peace of mind, that it is easy to discover people who are committing crimes,” he said.
Redondo explained that they are currently coordinating with Public Safety, Traffic Police, and the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) to determine the strategic areas where the devices should be located.
The local government's intention is to have 100 new cameras installed this year, thereby creating one of the most modern operations centers in the country.
The mayor indicated that, although they are aware that many of these actions could be insufficient due to the power of organized crime and drug trafficking, this investment is necessary to improve security in the province.
A total of nine homicides were recorded in the province during the first weeks of 2026, four more than during the same period last year.
Previous, and added to this are shootouts over turf wars between gangs involved in small-scale drug dealing.
In addition to investing in technology, the local government is promoting a comprehensive program to prevent crime, violence, and addiction.
Devices and digital surveillance. 77 community alarms, each with two cameras.
. 24 outdoor surveillance cameras, each with two cameras.
. 150 dome and bullet cameras facing the community.
. 162 in municipal buildings: market, town hall, civic center, municipal campus, and traffic school.
. The goal is for the municipality to have more than 600 video surveillance devices by the end of 2026.
