India Defends Sovereign Energy Strategy

(MENAFN) India defended its sovereign energy procurement strategy Monday, declaring national interests will dictate purchasing decisions as New Delhi navigates a landmark trade agreement with Washington that eliminates punitive tariffs.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized strategic autonomy in energy matters following Friday's interim trade framework announcement that resolved escalating tensions with the Trump administration. "Whether it is the government or indeed our business at the end of the day, national interest will be the guiding factor for us in our choices," Misri declared.

"The key drivers of our energy policy are adequate availability, fair pricing, and reliability of supply," he added, underscoring New Delhi's priorities in global energy markets.

India seeks "adequate energy at the right price and through reliable and secure supplies," officials reiterated, framing the policy as essential to national economic security.

The clarification follows President Donald Trump's swift reversal of a retaliatory 25% tariff slapped on Indian exports—a punitive measure imposed over New Delhi's continued purchases of Russian petroleum products.

A White House executive order issued Friday revealed India's commitments that triggered the tariff elimination. "India has committed to stop directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil, has represented that it will purchase United States energy products from the United States," Trump stated in the document.

"I have determined that India has taken significant steps to address the national emergency. … Accordingly, I have determined to eliminate the additional ad valorem rate of duty," Trump said.

Last month, Trump signaled a strategic energy realignment, announcing India would pivot toward Venezuelan crude rather than Iranian supplies. "India is coming in, and they're going to be buying Venezuelan oil," the president revealed.

The bilateral breakthrough marks a significant diplomatic victory for both nations, defusing trade tensions while reshaping global energy supply chains.
