Russia Volunteers to Take Iran's Enriched Uranium Stockpile
(MENAFN) Russia stands prepared to accept Iran's existing enriched uranium reserves, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced, as global powers scramble to prevent armed confrontation between Tehran and Washington.
"At the same time, it is important to note that the aforementioned stockpiles belong to Iran. Their presence in no way contradicts Tehran's obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons," Zakharova stated at a briefing on Wednesday, as quoted by Kommersant.
Tehran retains complete authority over the material, including determining whether to relocate it beyond Iranian borders and selecting export destinations, she emphasized.
The declaration arrives as international actors intensify crisis containment efforts between Tehran and Washington. Recent weeks have witnessed Washington deploying supplementary air defense apparatus to Middle Eastern installations, including Patriot and THAAD batteries, while dispatching an 'armada' spearheaded by the USS Abraham Lincoln to the Arabian Sea.
Washington has signaled that although immediate military action threats have subsided, the US maintains strike capability if circumstances require. Core American ultimatums encompass uranium enrichment limitations and constraints on Iran's ballistic missile arsenal. Iran insists its nuclear initiative serves exclusively peaceful objectives.
A Kuwaiti newspaper reported Monday that prospects of an imminent US strike against Tehran have decreased, with diplomacy receiving renewed opportunity following intensive mediation—primarily by Russia and Türkiye, alongside Qatar.
Moscow initially proposed removing enriched uranium from Iran last summer, indicating it could extract and reprocess the material before returning it to Iran's nuclear installations. Russia additionally notified Iran, the US, and the International Atomic Energy Agency of its proposal. Iranian authorities, however, did not publicly provide a definitive response.
In January, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov affirmed that Russia remains ready to help avoid escalation between the US and Iran.
