Mastercard Launches 'Tap For Change' To Support Landmark Cancer Hospital
Introduced in partnership with the Colours of Courage Trust, the campaign aims to unite communities in supporting cancer patients while expanding access to advanced care. As part of the initiative, Mastercard has pledged USD 750,000towards the construction of the Trail Cancer Hospital in Karapitiya.
The planned 10-storey, 160-bed hospital will provide advanced oncology services for both adult and paediatric patients. Facilities will include state-of-the-art diagnostics, operating theatres, a bone marrow transplant unit, and a comprehensive continuum of cancer care, significantly strengthening Sri Lanka's national oncology capacity.
Commencing January 2026, every contactless transaction made using a Mastercard debit or credit card in Sri Lanka-including ecommerce payments-will contribute directly to funding the hospital's construction. By simply tapping their cards, cardholders, merchants, and partners can collectively support a project designed to transform cancer care for thousands of underserved patients and their families.
Commenting on the initiative, Sandun Hapugoda, Country Manager for Sri Lanka and Maldives at Mastercard, said the campaign reflects the company's belief in using technology and collaboration to drive social impact, allowing every transaction to become an act of generosity.
Mahela Jayawardene, former Sri Lanka cricket captain and Co-founder of the Colours of Courage Foundation, said the initiative empowers Sri Lankans to come together for a greater cause, with every tap helping build a hospital that will bring hope and healing to countless families.
The Tap for Change campaign builds on Mastercard's global commitment to linking digital innovation with healthcare access, education, and financial inclusion, reinforcing its philosophy of Doing Well by Doing Good.
