SSPDF Orders Evacuation Before Jonglei Offensive
(MENAFN) The South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) on Sunday instructed civilians, aid groups, and United Nations staff to withdraw at once from opposition-held territories in Jonglei State, citing preparations for a large-scale military campaign.
In a recorded address, SSPDF spokesperson Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang announced a strict deadline for humanitarian and UN personnel, stating, “All NGOs and UNMISS personnel operating and working in Nyirol, Uror and Akobo counties are given 48 hours to leave,” as tensions escalate in the region.
Koang further emphasized that residents living in the affected locations should urgently move to areas under government authority to avoid harm, noting that the armed forces are gearing up for “Operation Enduring Peace” targeting the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLA-IO).
He also issued a stark warning regarding civilian conduct near opposition forces, saying, “Armed civilians found loitering in and around SPLA-IO barracks, assembly areas, and rally grounds would be considered as legitimate military targets,” underscoring the risks facing those who remain.
According to Koang, civilians carrying weapons — including those not affiliated with the White Army — are required to hand over their arms to the closest SSPDF base and relocate alongside their families and livestock to zones controlled by the government.
Earlier the same day, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) raised alarm over information suggesting that a high-ranking military commander had encouraged soldiers to launch attacks against civilians in Jonglei State.
The mission also reported that the surge in violence between the principal signatories of the 2018 peace accord has reportedly forced more than 180,000 people to flee their homes across Jonglei.
