Hungarian PM Opposes EU's USD1.5T Ukraine Debt Plan

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban issued a stark warning Friday that EU leaders risk burying member states under massive debt if they approve $1.5 trillion in Ukraine spending programs.

During a Brussels press conference, Orban revealed he had obtained a confidential EU document whose contents struck him "like an atomic bomb blast in the chest." While unable to share the document publicly, he disclosed its alarming implications for European finances.

"There is a Ukrainian demand that the EU give $800 billion in the next ten years, and a document that says that it's good," Orban explained. He clarified this $800 billion figure covers reconstruction alone, separate from an additional $700 billion Kiev seeks for military expenditures.

Reports indicated an $800 billion reconstruction agreement was scheduled for signing this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos by the US, EU, and Ukraine. However, the gathering was upstaged by US President Donald Trump's Greenland acquisition efforts and his 'Board of Peace' initiative launch.

The reconstruction agreement faced delays, prompting Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky to initially abandon his Davos appearance—before reversing that decision after Trump announced an upcoming bilateral meeting.

Orban, a persistent opponent of the EU's Ukraine strategy, predicted Brussels would negotiate with Ukraine to reduce these financial commitments. He flatly rejected the possibility of Ukrainian EU membership by 2027, declaring no Hungarian parliament would approve accession "in the next hundred years."

In 2024, Brussels and certain EU nations advocated utilizing Russia's frozen sovereign assets to finance Ukraine. After Belgium and other doubtful nations blocked the "reparation loan" citing legal vulnerabilities, the EU pivoted to securing €90 billion ($105 billion) through borrowing against its collective budget. Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic withdrew from participation.
