Iran Praises Pakistan for Voting Against UN Resolution
(MENAFN) Iran's foreign minister expressed gratitude Saturday following Pakistan's opposition to a UN resolution criticizing Tehran's human rights record, according to Pakistan's Foreign Ministry.
Ishaq Dar, Pakistan's Foreign Minister currently visiting Dubai, received a telephone call from Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi, during which both officials discussed evolving regional and international matters, the ministry confirmed in an official statement.
"Foreign Minister Araghchi thanked DPM (Deputy Prime Minister)/FM (Foreign Minister) for his strong support and Pakistan's position at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, including its call for a vote as well as voting against the resolution concerning Iran," the statement declared.
Friday saw the Human Rights Council approve a resolution prolonging the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran for two years and extending the Special Rapporteur's mandate on Iranian human rights conditions for one year, following a dedicated session.
China, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Cuba, and Vietnam rejected the measure and cast opposing votes.
The resolution demanded immediate inquiry by the Fact-Finding Mission into suppression of mass demonstrations that erupted December 28 across the nation.
The Fact-Finding Mission received instructions to launch urgent examinations into alleged severe human rights violations and abuses linked to the protests, including preparation for potential future legal proceedings, consistent with its authorized scope.
