Finland says Russia to carry on attacks on Baltic Sea communication lines
(MENAFN) Finland’s military intelligence warned on Thursday that Russia is likely to continue targeting critical undersea communication infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
In its latest security review, the agency noted that Russia retains significant capability to use both civilian and state-linked vessels in the region for intelligence gathering and potential disruption of undersea cables.
The assessment emphasized that, for now, there is no immediate military threat to Finland, as Russian forces remain heavily engaged in Ukraine. However, officials cautioned that the security situation could change if Russia succeeds in rebuilding or expanding its military capabilities in the future.
The warning comes after a series of incidents in 2025 that damaged multiple undersea telecommunications and power links in the Baltic, continuing a pattern of disruptions that began in late 2024. Most of the affected infrastructure involved fiber-optic data cables, though some power interconnectors were also impacted, raising concerns among regional governments about potential sabotage and hybrid warfare tactics.
