Deadly factory blast rocks northern China, killing two
(MENAFN) A major explosion at a factory in northern China has killed two workers and injured 84 others, with eight people reported missing, according to state media.
The blast occurred around mid-afternoon local time at the Baogang United Steel plant in Inner Mongolia, shaking the surrounding area. Videos shared online showed thick plumes of smoke rising into the sky, and debris scattered across the ground, including collapsed ceilings and damaged pipes.
Of those hospitalized, five sustained serious injuries. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion. Baogang United Steel is a significant state-owned enterprise in China’s iron and steel industry.
China has experienced numerous industrial accidents in the past, ranging from factory blasts and mine collapses to mudslides. Notably, two massive explosions at the Tianjin port in 2015 killed 173 people and injured hundreds more, causing widespread destruction. More recently, an explosion at a chemical plant in Shandong province last May claimed five lives and injured at least 19, with nearby building windows blown out by the force of the blast.
